What Is Eczema?
Eczema is an umbrella term for a group of inflammatory skin conditions collectively known as dermatitis. The most common and clinically significant form is atopic dermatitis (AD)—a chronic, relapsing disease that affects millions worldwide.
Atopic dermatitis is characterized by:
Persistent itch and skin inflammation
A weakened skin barrier and imbalance in the skin microbiome
Sleep disruption and cumulative disease burden
Significant impairment in quality of life
Rising global prevalence across age groups
Substantial unmet need despite therapeutic advances
Eczema Is a Multifactorial, Systems-Level Disease
Atopic dermatitis is a complex condition driven by the interaction of multiple biological systems, including:
Impaired skin barrier integrity
Dysregulated immune responses and cutaneous inflammation
Altered skin microbiome composition
Disruption of the skin’s acid mantle and elevated skin surface pH
Environmental triggers and internal biological factors
These systems are deeply interconnected and do not operate in isolation. Disruption in one area can amplify dysfunction in others, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of barrier breakdown, elevated pH, microbial imbalance, inflammation, and chronic itch.
Soteri Labs Integrative Scientific Approach
At Soteri Labs, we study eczema through a systems-level lens—recognizing that the disease arises from the interaction of multiple, interconnected biological processes.
Rather than targeting a single pathway, our approach focuses on restoring the underlying skin environment that regulates these processes in concert.

Restoring the acid mantle and maintaining optimal skin surface pH
Within this network, skin surface pH functions as a key upstream regulator. By maintaining a mildly acidic environment, we help regulate enzymatic activity, support commensal microbial balance, and strengthen barrier integrity.
By targeting these foundational mechanisms, our goal is to deliver durable, system-wide improvements—addressing root causes of disease rather than providing temporary symptom relief.
